Join Simone Crockett and John Beddingfield on Sunday mornings, beginning January 29 as we explore the relationship between art and spirituality using the book Pilgrimage to the Museum: Man’s Search for God through Art and Time by Stephen F. Auth. The museum of the title is The Metropolitan Museum of Art and in the book Auth reflects on paintings and sculpture at the museum.
In dialogue with the book, we will survey the history of Christianity and the history of art to understand the context in which various works of art at the Met were created. With that overview, we will delve into the stories the works of art tell and the questions and issues raised about art and our spiritualities from our encountering and experiencing the art.
Copies of Auth’s book are available in the back of the church, at the museum, and online. Throughout the 6 weeks of the course we would encourage everyone to visit the Metropolitan Museum to directly and personally experience the works of art so we might all share our insights and questions during our Sunday morning conversations.
