Mr. Adam Koch, Director of Music and Organist

Mr. Adam P. Koch, Director of Music and Organist at Holy Trinity, Manhattan

Prior to coming to Holy Trinity in fall of 2022, Adam served as Director of Music and Organist at All Saints’ Episcopal Church in Frederick, MD, where he oversaw a vibrant and diverse music program. Adam graduated with honors from Shenandoah Conservatory with a degree in Church Music and the Performance Certificate in Organ Performance as a student of Dr. J. Thomas Mitts. He is in the final stages of completing a Masters in Organ Performance. Previous studies were with Dr. Stephen Hamilton while concurrently serving as the Assistant Musician at The Church of the Holy Trinity (Episcopal) in Manhattan (2005-2006) master classes with Marie-Claire Alain and John Weaver. During the summer of 2018 Adam was a masterclass performer at the Basilica of Ste. Clotilde in Paris, led by Titular Organist, Olivier Penin, and was coached on the music of Olivier Messiaen at Sainte-Trinité, also in Paris, where Messiaen was organist for sixty-one years.

Adam served the Artistic Director and Conductor of the New Wave Singers of Baltimore for nine seasons. Under his direction, the chorus performed the world premiere of Nathan Hall’s “I am in Love with the World,” a multi-movement choral work based on the final interview of Maurice Sendak with NPR host, Terry Gross. As an accompanist and solo organist, Adam has performed throughout the U.S., the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Germany. Adam also served as the Moravian College (now Moravian University) college choir accompanist, and college organist and accompanist of the Hunter College Choir.

The Rieger Pipe Organ
Schwarzach, Austria (1987)
Mechanical key action
Electric stop action
Solid-State combination action
3 manuals, 33 stops, 55 ranks

The three-manual and pedal Rieger organ of 55 ranks is placed in a wide but shallow case having five levels of towers. Located in the south transept of the church, the organ surrounds a large stained-glass window without covering it. All pipework is of high-percentage tin, except for the Positif Flûte (oak), the Postif Cornet (25% tin), and the Pédale Bourdon (oak and pine). The Positif Chamade is mounted horizontally inside the case. The grand ravalement of the Pédale extends the range down to AAA and affects all stops in that division. The tonal design of the instrument, built in 1987, was by Anthony Newman, who was organist at the time.  Doug Hunt has been the curator of the instrument since its installation in 1987.

Former organists at Holy Trinity include Daniel Beckwith, Cleveland Kersh, Stephen Jon Hamilton, Anthony Newman, Bronson Ragan, and Leonard Raver.
