On two Sunday mornings, we’ll explore images and ideas from the exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. (On view through March 3, 2024).

“Byzantium” refers to the ancient Greek city that eventually became Constantinople, and then Istanbul, but Byzantium also refers to a whole empire that spanned parts of Africa, Europe, and Asia. Byzantium’s extensive connections to northern and eastern Africa are not well known but the exhibition makes a start at exploring Africa’s position within the Byzantine world’s artistic, cultural, economic, and sociopolitical life.

Though we are not planning a trip to the museum together, you are urged to see the exhibition when you can. You can learn more about the exhibition HERE.
