Using the Study Guide Teresa of Ávila: Inner Joy, by Dale and Sandy Larsen, we will spend five weeks in October reflecting on the words of Teresa paired with scripture passages that amplify her thoughts. The booklet is out of print, so sections are photocopied and available in each of the Sunday’s Upcoming Listing on this website.
Teresa was born in Ávila, Spain in 1515, and was a Carmelite nun, a mystic, and a religious reformer. As reformer of the Discalced Carmelite Order she faced many challenges both within and outside her religious community. She writes of having struggled with prayer, but was later brought through a deeper conversion in faith and eventually was able to offer others invaluable help on the journey towards God. Her best known works include The Life, The Way of Perfection, The Interior Castle and The Book of the Foundations. These profoundly human, witty, and sprawling writings have been a source of refreshment for many over the centuries.
