Beginning January 29 the Sunday Christian Ed will explore the relationship between art and spirituality using the book Pilgrimage to the Museum: Man’s Search for God through Art and Time by Stephen F. Auth. The museum of the title is The Metropolitan Museum of Art and in the book Auth reflects on paintings and sculpture at the museum.

A guide for what we’ll be looking at on January 29 can be found HERE.

In dialogue with the book, we will survey the history of Christianity and the history of art to understand the context in which various works of art at the Met were created. With that overview, we will delve into the stories the works of art tell and the questions and issues raised about art and our spirituality from our encountering and experiencing the art.

Copies of Auth’s book are available in the back of the church and online. Throughout the 6 weeks of the course we would encourage everyone to visit the Metropolitan Museum to directly and personally experience the works of art so we might all share our insights and questions during our Sunday morning conversations. By clicking here, you can access a preview of the art we will be discussing January 29; it has the Metropolitan Museum’s gallery numbers for the art in case you would like to visit and see the art before and/or after the class.
