Around 1205, St. Francis of Assisi was praying in the dilapidated Church of San Damiano when he received a vision of Christ speaking from a crucifix. Christ said, “Francis, go and rebuild my church which, as you see, is falling down.” At first, Francis understood this literally, and went about renovating several old churches. But over time, Francis came to understand Christ’s invitation to rebuild the heart of the church through devotion to the poor, commitment to prayer, and a passion for communicating the Gospel through creative preaching and faithful action.
Father Beddingfield will share some of his own experience with Franciscan spirituality and offer several observations as to how Francis might be a helpful model for the Church (and especially, The Episcopal Church) as we renew and rebuild after the pandemic and into the 21st Century.
